MDS 012 – 5 Ways To Improve Your Church Communications with Bo Lane

This week I have a great guest for you, who is what I like to call a communications guru. Today, we are joined by my friend Bo Lane. Bo and I worked together at Timberlake Church in Redmond, WA a few years back. I was the technical director and he was the media director so we worked closely the entire time I was there. I really got to know not only Bo’s talents as a videographer, but also his heart and passion to see the church reach people far from God, via good church communications. Since our time together at Timberlake, Bo has continues to refine his process to help others achieve great communications within the local church and we want to share that with you today!

5 Ways To Improve Your Church Communications

  • It’s not my job to do your job (10:05)
    • We will come back to this later
    • It’s my job to communicate the mission and the vision of the church
  • Church size really does matter (11:15)
    • We should celebrate numbers
    • Our church leadership and communication style has to change as our church size changes
    • Are you a generalist or a specialist? At what size of your church do you change from one to the other?
    • How can you retain who you have or gain who you don’t, or are you willing to give one up.
  • Define the foundational, occasional and discretionary elements of your services and your events (25:50)
    • What does it mean to be the church within your community?
    • You need to define, by writing it down, who you are
      • This is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
    • We have to ask what our why is
  • As communication people, we are the glass that magnifies, not defines
    • What is our purpose? Biblical and practical.
    • If we only have 7 minutes in our service for discretionary items, how are we best using that time?
  • Be intentional about being intentional (39:30)
    • What and how do we promote
    • We have to do this every step of the way.

MDS 011 – The Big 3 Of Youth Ministry with Shawn Roberts

This week we finally jump into the world of Youth Ministry. I know we will do more episodes on youth ministry in the future, but I wanted to start out on this topic with a bang. My guest this week is Shawn Roberts, who is currently the Lead Pastor at The Fathers House Foursquare Church in Granite Falls, WA, but before accepting his currently position, Shawn worked as a Jr. & Sr. high pastor at a handful of churches for the past 25 years. A few of those years, I had the privilege to work with Shawn at New Life Church in Everett, WA. Shawn has an undying commitment to see youth come to know God and he has some crazy stories to tell about how he’s achieved that. From metal bands, to dreadlocks, to hockey and more, Shawn’s ministry has always been full on fun, excitement and unexpected but amazing events. I cant wait for you guys to hear what he has to say!

MDS 010 – 3 Ways To Balance Family and Ministry with Signe Tapert

This week we celebrate reaching our first double digit episode by having an extra special guest for episode 10. I’m honored to have my very own wife, Signe Tapert, joining us for today’s discussion. Our topic today centers around our top 3 ways to balance family and ministry. Signe and I are celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary this year, and although 5 years is not a long time, we do however feel like we have got somewhat of a grasp on how to accomplish this balance successfully. We are in no way shape or form experts on this topic, BUT I do believe we have some valuable insight to share about what has worked for us.

MDS 009 – How To Be A Creative That Your Leadership Loves with Tristen Cox

This week I am joined by a great friend of mine, the Worship Director at Timberlake Church in Redmond, WA, Tristen Cox. Tristen and I attended college together at Northwest University in Kirkland, WA and worked together at Timberlake. Since coming on staff at Timberlake in 2010, Tristen has held a handful of different titles and positions at Timberlake within the creative department, yet no matter what his title and job description is, he continues to be a creative force that his leadership team loves. Typically in churches, the leadership just doesn’t quite understand us creative people, but with Tristen’s advice, I firmly believe you can change that mindset around and become a voice that cannot be ignored.

How To Be A Creative That Your Leadership Loves

  • Your creative vision is never bigger than your church’s mission (13:24)
    • Don’t use creativity for the sake of being creative, use it to accomplish a goal
    • Everyone has the opportunity to hear the gospel, just not everyone has that opportunity twice, so it’s our job to eliminate distractions.
  • Nothing replaces hard work (29:30)
    • If your only creative outlet is church, you’re going to frustrate alot of people
  • Understand the curse that comes with your gift (36:30)
    • You have no excuse to not do your job well just because you’re a creative
    • You have to remember you’re getting paid from people sacrificially giving
    • We are in the people business
